Electrical Sensing of Hand Motion from the Wrist

"Sensing human hand motion has great benefits for understanding the hand structure and function and designing input interface. However, the sensing environment and user's action are limited with the previous technologies. We focused on the change of the wrist shape according to the hand motion and developed a unique hand motion capture technique by the electrical sensing of the wrist shape. Especially, the sensing device is composed of a wrist band which converts the wrist shape to the electrical contact impedance and an impedance measurement circuit. The finger angles are estimated from the circuit output which changes according to the contact impedance. The developed sensing technology is expected to contribute to the hand motion capture without the environment and action limitations."
