Haptic Display by using Dilatant Fluid

"The liquid which is made from water and starch is a kind of dilatant fluid, which dynamically changes the state from fluid to solid according to the applied shear force. We focused on the interesting characteristics and proposed a haptic device which can present multi-modal sensation by using the liquid. In our proposed method, the density of the dilatant fluid is controlled for presenting passive force. To this end, we developed a glove type haptic device which has a filter of starch particle and water sucking/ejecting mechanism to control the friction between the hand and the fluid. We showed the device enables users to feel "stickiness", "hardness" and "roughness" sensations in various intensities. Furthermore, we have implemented an entertainment system in which users can design haptic sensation by blending colors projected on the fluid screen."
